Self-directed learning a process in which a person takes full responsibility for his or her own learning. A self-directed learner diagnoses learning needs, formulates goals, identifies resources for learning, chooses and implements appropriate learning strategies, and evaluates learning outcomes (Walsh, 2017). The quality of teaching and learning in health professions education will be more beneficial if learning institutions facilitate self-directed learning (Choi and Anderson, 2016). The quality of learning was reflected in a study conducted in a college science education class where self-regulated learning activities were used to engage twelve students with lecture materials. Students were asked to write a summary and questions for each lecture. Eleven out 12 students reported that the self-directed learning activity was challenging yet rewarding. Students also reported that the self-regulated activity led to a more constructive learning environment that cultivated their critical thinking skills (Choi et al., 2016).
Clinical reasoning also known as therapeutic reasoning is the action used by professionals to plan, direct, perform, and reflect on client care (Schell, 2014). Clinical reasoning is an essential part of the occupational therapy profession. Current and future OTs require continuous self-directed learning to adopt ongoing reflective and critical approach to practice. The ability to provide safe, high-quality care is dependent upon therapists’ ability to adequately reason, think deeper, make clinical judgement to effectively treat clients. Therapists must have a three-track mind and use the different logical approaches to tackle the clinical problem that needs to be addressed (Schell, 2014).
Completing the CliftonStrengths Finder and Foursight Assessment helped me to self-assess and identify areas of strengths, weaknesses and problem-solving preference. My top five strengths are Relator, Deliberative, Activator, Communication, and Maximizer. I have a deeper understanding about my approach to learning and areas I need to improve on to develop as a professional. My problem-solving preference is that I am an Ideator; one who generates imaginative ideas and shares with others.
Knowing myself as a learner, being aware of my strengths and weaknesses will help me become more capable of adjusting to new situations throughout my life time as a learner.
The areas that I need to work on is prioritizing and communicating ideas that are promising and using constructive feedback to improve performance. My strengths are many, the most significant being my drive to achieve and ability to communicate effectively with others.
The academic experiences and knowledge gained at Bay path have led to professional growth and self-discovery and has prepared me for the journey of self-directed learning. I am eager to take on the challenge of becoming a self-directed learner; it will promote continuous growth and development as I embark upon my career as an occupational therapist. It is essential that therapists continue to learn throughout their professional career. Self-regulated learning will definitely help build on strengths, increase knowledge base and maximize my potential. This style of learning will improve my ability to think, perform adaptively, and provide the best point of care relevant to clients.
The quality of learning is achieved when an individual is actively involved, resulting in deeper insight, stronger critical thinking skills, and increased ability to adapt and think on your feet. Therefore, self-directed learning will help me acquire the knowledge and skills I need to develop as a future therapist. I am looking forward to the journey of self-directed learning. Self-regulated learning will help me grow as a person, a student, and a future occupational therapist.
