Theater studies

You will respond to 2 short answer prompts and 1 long answer prompt. You will have 3 short answer and 2 long answer prompts to choose from. Please DO NOT respond to more than 2 short and 1 long answer. Indicate which prompts you have chosen to answer with their corresponding number or letter. Please submit your responses as a doc or pdf to the Midterm Exam Assignment link on GauchoSpace under Week 6.

Your responses to the short answer prompts should each be 1 paragraph long. This means that each short answer should begin with a topic sentence and include evidence and analysis of that evidence to support your topic sentence.

Your response to the long answer prompt should be modeled on a standard 5-paragraph essay. This means you should begin with an introductory paragraph that includes your thesis statement, then provide evidence and analysis of that evidence to support your thesis statement with the following middle paragraphs, and have a conclusion paragraph. Your thesis statement should be a sentence or two that sums up the argument you will be making in your essay.

Evidence for both the long and short responses should come from class lectures and the plays themselves. You do not need to bring in outside sources. When you use evidence from the plays or lectures, please provide a citation at the end of the sentence. For example, (Holman “Agamemnon Lecture”) or lines (1125-1128) or page numbers from the play (45). Direct quotes should be placed in quotation marks “”.  Failure to cite your sources is an act of academic dishonesty and can result in charges of plagiarism. Please DO NOT PLAGIARIZE. Taking the exam with other students is also considered cheating. Please do the work by yourself.

Choose 2 of the following short answer prompts:
1. Using one of the plays we have read so far, discuss the elements of the 5th century BCE Greek theater space. How might this play have used those stage elements? What evidence from the play supports this?
2. Using one of the plays we have read so far, discuss Aristotle’s definition of tragedy. Does the play you chose follow this definition? Why or why not? Support your answer with evidence from the play.
3. What was the role of the City Dionysia in Greek society during the 5th century BCE?

Choose 1 of the following long answer prompts:
a. We can understand the Greek term dike as both justice AND behaving as someone of their gender/social class/citizenship should behave. Select at least one character from the plays we have read to discuss both meanings of dike. Create an argument that you can support with evidence from the play(s) that demonstrates both understandings of dike in the character(s) you have selected.
b. Using at least one of the plays we have read so far, discuss the theme of revenge. Create an argument that you can support with evidence from the play(s).
