You are required to respond to one (1) of the following prompts in a thesis-driven essay that draws on
evidence from class readings and discussions for support. Your essay should be between 1000-1200 words
in length (roughly, 4 pages).
In your response you must make specific reference to both In Search of Respect and Hunted. By specific
reference, I mean that you should quote or paraphrase discrete passages of text. You may cite course
discussions in your essay, but these citations should not replace direct references to the texts.
Your essay should be a synthesis of ideas, concepts and evidence that you have culled from the readings
and from class discussions. The exercise is to use the materials you’ve read, class discussions, and the
prompts provided to craft a well-argued and well-written essay that will provide evidence of the work you
have put into the class. Both prompts can be answered in multiple ways. There are no “right” or “wrong”
answers. However, some arguments are stronger than others; please make sure you have thought
through your position on the question you answer. Try to argue it forcefully and directly.
You do not need to provide a works cited page, if you only reference materials assigned or used in class.
But do make sure to cite the author or title of the work you are referencing, and be sure to provide the
page of your reference when applicable.
Completed essays shall be submitted on Canvas.
PROMPTS
1. The titles of both texts read in this unit imply that the characters within are on a quest to find
meaning and purpose in their lives. How do the quests described (the hunt, the search) differ from
one another and what do they share in common? And given that both texts center primarily on
the experiences of men, what do both texts suggest about women and their pursuit of life
projects?
2. Even as both texts center on movement—the pursuit of respect, the hunt for sinners and
salvation—they also address the struggles of people who seem to be stuck in circumstances that
are beyond their control and are incredibly constraining. What does this tension between
movement and constraint reveal about gender, about power, and about powerlessness?
3. Although both text chronicle violent events and discuss the effects of these events on both victims
and perpetrators, both texts are also about care. What have you learned about love and care from
reading these two texts, and how do these lessons make you think differently than you had before
about violence, poverty, drug abuse and treatment, and the meaning of family?
