Question 1: Definitions (8 points)
Considering the definitions in your textbook, write a description using your own words of these four concepts that is consistent with definitions in class textbooks or notes. (2 points each)
Boundaries: Professional and Personal (be sure to state the differences between the two)
Question 2: Domains and Subdomains. Respond to both scenarios. (8 points).
Using the domains of self and professionalism, describe how the domains apply to the following situation.
You are a novice child and youth care practitioner working with a single parent and a biological child. In the course of your work, you realize that “you love the child as your own”. It is time for you to end the helping relationship with the child and parent. As you are discussing ending, the child gets upset and says: “No stay and live with us. You can’t leave us!” The parent adds; “I could pay you to look after xxx if you would stay in our lives. You mean a lot to my child.”
Review the domain of Relationship, and the subdomain of Use of Activities. Describe an activity you will develop to address this need and explain how you will use it in the following situation.
Henry is an 11 year old boy; has a diagnosis of Asperger’s and ADHD, and he experiences high anxiety. Henry has great difficulty with change, social cues, and accurately interpreting the nonverbal cues of others. You are a child and youth care practitioner in the school and decide to use activities to get him to practice building relationships with peers and dealing with changes of structure/routine in his classroom.
Question 3: Defining the Child and Youth Care Profession (6 points)
In your own words, write a definition of the profession that reflects the themes, scope, and field of child and youth care work. Your description should be no more than 250 words in length.
Question 4: What theory/domain? (2 points/scenario)
Review the following statements made by CYC workers and identify what theory they are using to explain the child/youth circumstances. Just list the theory or domain represented. No need to justify your answers.
I am wondering if it is important to consider Joe’s situation as being an example of Joe’s environments not being a good fit for him to get his needs met.
So you think that Molly’s poor self-image and need for revenge means that she is still seeing herself as a victim?
I need to assess if this community is safe and has the required resources to help Sam and her family.
We need to look at Joanne’s behavior from the concept of a “new normal.”
I am experiencing conflict. On one hand, I support Jeannie’s need for privacy but on the other hand, if her parents knew what was going on, they would likely step forward and help her.
Question 5: The Themes of Child and Youth Care (6 points)
A child and his circumstances is described below. Choose three themes of CYC and describe how you would use them in this situation.
Mahdi is an 8 year old boy; he has a 6 year old sister Iman. Mahdi and Iman have just arrived in Canada from Syria with their parents. They had been living in a refugee camp in Turkey for about 8 months, before coming to Canada. Once in Canada, the family spent 2 months living in a hotel in Toronto with other Syrian refugee’s before being located, through the refugee relocation program, in the community that you currently live in.
The family is attempting to get settled and the children are attending school. The children speak and understand English quite well. This is their first Canadian school experience. The father, Jamal, speaks English and the mother, Rima, has very limited speaking of English but her understanding is quite good. The family speaks Arabic at home and are practicing Muslims.
Mahdi was placed in grade 3 and Iman was placed in grade 1. The siblings will interact with each other but have a limited peer group at school. Other children have attempted to invite them into play activities however Mahdi and Iman do not engage. Academically the children are reported to be doing reasonably well.
The teacher has asked you; a practicing child and youth care practitioner, to try and engage with the children within the school, help them with their peer relationships and build a relationship with the parents. Where do you start….and what could you do?
