1. Complete the WW2 module. Then, read this two-part article:
HIROSHIMA: WAS IT NECESSARY? (Doug Long)Links to an external site. (This link seems to not work on some devices as it is an embedded page. If you have trouble, just internet search the title and author, it will come right up).
2. Based on the article and other module information, analyze whether you think it actually was, or was not, necessary to drop the atomic bomb(s) on Japan. Your response should be 500-700 words (but not primarily composed of long excerpt quotes).
Make sure you include your definition of “necessary” in your response as that may impact your answer!
Regardless of the argument you craft, you need to support your argument with plenty of specific details (from the article and the module) as your evidence. This is your analysis (informed opinion), but must be based in concrete evidence. I’m looking for 4-5 specific pieces of evidence.
Be sure to cite your evidence in parenthesis next to your point in your typed response or in your notes you’ll use for your oral presentation. Your grade won’t be based on how much I agree with you, but the number of specific evidence examples you provide. Specific means names, dates, details, and which primary source you are talking about, NOT merely quoting the article author Long. His article gives you the complete citation for the source and you can simply copy and paste his citations.) YOUR citation examples:
(Long article: Admiral William Leahy, I Was There, pg. 259)
(Long article: U.S. Dept. of State, Foreign Relations of the U.S., The Conference of Berlin (Potsdam), vol. 2, pg. 1474-1476)
(Module- WW2- “Lecture Slides- Pacific Theatre, slide 12)
Sources: Your graded evidence may only come from the following sources (outside information will not count towards your grade). You can pull plenty of evidence from the assigned article and the module. Some additional primary sources listed below may be optionally included if you wish.
Doug Long two-part article “Hiroshima: Was it Necessary?”
Primary source “PROTECTION OF CIVILIAN POPULATIONS AGAINST BOMBING FROM THE AIR IN CASE OF WAR- Unanimous resolution of the League of Nations Assembly, September 30, 1938” (Links to an external site.)
Article by a nuclear historian with great primary sources (Links to an external site.) on city target selection and why Kyoto, the original first target was spared. Includes both Truman and Stimson diaries and city selection committee reports.
Primary source collection: Secretary of War Henry Stimson’s recollections on the decision, (Links to an external site.) published in Harper’s Magazine in 1947.
Any of the primary sources from this rich lesson plan collection of resources (Links to an external site.) (look for the red hyperlinks) – If you choose to use this data base, be sure to provide complete citations for your sources.
3. Respond thoughtfully to a peer who answered differently than you.
What evidence did they use to support their argument? Was it different evidence, or a different analysis of the same evidence?
