Short Essay Questions
Choose TWO of the following questions and write a short essay response that is not more than 250 words (1/2 page if writing is medium size). Ensure that your response is relevant to the topic of each question. (3 points per question; 6 points).
What was a “defining moment” when you realized you wanted a career working with children and youth?
Remember what you did as a teenager that you constantly got in trouble for. What was the behavior and what purpose did this behavior serve at the time? How has this behavior shaped who you are today?
How has your diversity shaped your beliefs about children and youth who witness domestic violence?
If you were to describe the profession of child and youth work to a friend who is not in the helping profession, what would you say that accurately describes this profession?
Choose TWO of the case examples below, and apply the described concepts to the situation. Each case scenario is worth 4 points (8 points in total).
Joannie: Concept of Social Construction
Using this concept, explain how social construction is affecting Joannie.
Joannie is a 14 year old girl who has been suspended from school for an indefinite period for physically assaulting another girl after an argument over a piece of clothing. Joannie has been charged for the assault. When asked about the incident, Joannie just “brushes it off as not a big deal” and that the other girl deserved it. The school principal is clear that if Joannie returns to the school she will only be allowed to attend the alternate program. Joannie’s parents are very angry with Joannie as her behavior has become public and she has embarrassed them. They are thinking of sending her to live with her grandparents until “this blows over”. Joannie is refusing to consider living with her grandparents and wants to stay at home as she has “friends here who understand her”
George: Concept of Strength and Competence (a CYC theme)
Using this concept, identify the skills and competence George is demonstrating in this situation.
George is ten years old and is currently living in foster care because of significant parental neglect. During the first six weeks in care, the foster parents have become concerned about some of George’s behaviors. They report that George is very withdrawn and does not easily interact with them. He is reported as “being food aggressive” – meaning he will grab the last piece of fruit, will be the first to the table and overfill his plate, he steals food at night and hides it in his room, etc. The foster parents are concerned about this as there is no need for George to behave like this—he gets “plenty to eat” and they worry that other kids will start copying the behavior. They also describe George as a “hoarder” in that he goes through the recycling, and sometimes garbage, and picks out things to keep. They are wondering what the behavior means as he will share what he gets with other children and this seems to be the only time/way he interacts with others.
Wilson: Concept of Experiential (another CYC theme)
How will you use this concept to help Wilson?
Wilson recently lost his father in a car accident. Wilson was with his father and mother and both he and his mother survived the accident. He has been “unreachable” and any attempt to engage him is met with silence or he changes the subject. The CYC worker believes that he needs help to understand his feelings and to find the words to talk with others. The CYC worker also believes that he is afraid to talk about his loss as this creates memories of the accident.
Choose the following scenarios and use the ecological perspective, draw an ecological map of the situation. Draw your ecological map on a separate piece of paper. When completed take a photograph of it and send it to the Open Learning Faculty Member with the questions file. Write your name on the drawing so the Open Learning Faculty Member can clearly see it.
