Minot says creative nonfiction is “based on actual events, characters, and places; it is written with a special concern for language; and it tends to be more informal and personal than other types of nonfiction writing” (Scanlon).
Creative nonfiction is a depiction of real life events that the author has experienced or witnessed, using creative literary techniques to tell the story.
Before you read a nonfiction essay, figure out what sort of essay it is—
Is it, a personal essay (any subject)/a | memoir (memories of a life) |literary journalism (using fictional elements to tell a news story) | narrative history (retelling an event in history) | travel journalism |
Consider the author’s version of Real life: What real life event is this essay about? What is going on? What is the story this writer tells? Why is the author telling the story the way they do? Who is the audience? What are main themes the author reveals?
Sense of place/setting: What does the setting look like? Feel like? Where is it? When is it?
Point of view: Who is telling the story? Why did the author choose him/her/they? What can he/she/they see or know that others might not or don’t know? What conflicts is the author revealing in the tone they use to write? What does the author see from a personal view (maybe revealing internal thoughts) or from a more distanced view? Our essay is written in first person Point of View, so now consider how the author shows us what he sees and remembers.
Voice: how are the sentences and paragraphs created? Are they: serious | casual/informal | instructive | sincere |sarcastic | cocky | reflective | young | old | indignant | optimistic | pessimistic | honest? Your job is to analyze why the author uses the voice he/she/or they does, and why it affects the meaning or tone of the story.
Character: Who is the dominant character or person/people in this essay? What do you know about him/her/them? Appearance? Personality? What is it that he/she/they wants/needs/cares about, etc.?
Language What is the tone (emotional quality) of this essay? Consider emotions when you write about the language created with sentence structure and paragraph choices.
How effectively does the author use any of the following: dialog, figurative language (metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, etc.), imagery?
Purpose/Theme/Impression: What does this essay reveal about life? About human relationships? About right and wrong? About what is important?
