Session Nine Biblical Perspective Journal Assignment

Nearly every session of this course, you will be given a biblical perspective prompt (a scripture or parable or characteristic of God) that you will reflect on. These prompts are chosen based on the material we are covering in class at the time. Read the prompt and reflect on it. Then write out your reflection. Each reflection should be about a page long and should include biblical and scientific references as well as personal reflection. Compile all your reflections into a single document being sure to clearly identify and title each journal entry. Your journal should be double spaced, in standard APA format. Remember that each of your entries should include biblical and scientific references. Please cite these references at the end of each entry instead of at the end of the document.

Session 1 Biblical Perspective Journal

Consider Leviticus 3:17.

“It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations, in all your dwelling places, that you eat neither fat nor blood.” (English Standard Version)

Do both biblical and scientific research and discuss your theory on why individuals should not eat blood. Does your research impact how you view God? Does it impact how you view blood?

Session 2 Biblical Perspective Journal

All throughout scripture we see the “heart” discussed as having human characteristics and representing the internal state of the individual. Consider the following verses:

Proverbs 20:9, “Who can say, ‘I have kept my heart pure; I am clean and without sin’?” (ESV)

Jeremiah 16:12, “and because you have done worse than your fathers, for behold, every one of you follows his stubborn, evil will, refusing to listen to me.” (ESV)

Hebrews 10:22, “let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.” (ESV)

Reflect and discuss why the heart is spoken of in scripture (and in everyday life) as having characteristics and qualities other than biological cells and chambers. Are scripture and God interested in the anatomical heart? Why of all of the organs in the body would the heart be chosen to be described with such qualities?

Session 3 Biblical Perspective Journal

Throughout scripture the concept of breath represents life.

Genesis 2:7, “Then the Lord God formed a man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.” (ESV)

Do some scientific and biblical research and discuss why breath is necessary for life. Reflect on the above scripture. What is meant by “God breathed into his nostrils?” How should this scripture be read? Literally? Metaphorically? Is it just imagery?

Session 4 Biblical Perspective Journal

We see in scripture a constant discussion regarding the cleanliness and un-cleanliness of food.

Leviticus 11:4, “Nevertheless, among those that chew the cud or part the hoof, you shall not eat these: The camel, though it chews the cud, but does not part the hoof, is unclean to you.” (ESV)

Romans 14:20, “Do not, for the sake of food, destroy the work of God. Everything is indeed clean, but it is wrong for anyone to make another stumble by what he eats.” (ESV)

Do some biblical and scientific research. Are there some foods that we should not eat? Is it a sin to eat these foods? There appears to be a shift from Old Testament thinking about the cleanliness of food and New Testament thinking. What caused the shift? Why do we see a difference?

Session 6 Biblical Perspective Journal

Throughout our study of the kidneys we see that one of their major functions is to maintain water homeostasis.  This is a major function of the kidneys as water is essential to life.  Without it we perish.

John 4:14
but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life

Reflect and write about the following questions.  In the above passage is Jesus talking about giving people literal water?  Is it possible to never thirst again?  Describe the connection Jesus is making between water and eternal life.

Session 7 Biblical Perspective Journal

Consider the following passages on how scripture discusses the acquisition of health:

Proverbs 3:7-8, “Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.” (ESV)

Luke 11:34, “Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is bad, your body also is full of darkness.” (ESV)

We know from our study of the immune system that to have a healthy individual requires a healthy immune system and that wisdom and the health of your eyes don’t play a role in warding off disease. In such, how do we explain the above scripture? Is there a different kind of health than just biological health? Do some biblical and scientific research looking at these passages and reflect on their potential meanings and implications in your own life.

Session 8 Biblical Perspective Journal

In light of our discussion on reproduction consider the following verse.

Genesis 9:7, “And you, be fruitful and multiply, increase greatly on the earth and multiply in it.” (ESV)

Now consider the overpopulation crises in some parts of the world. Do some research on the strain the increased population has put on the earth. We believe that scripture is timeless and so this passage still applies today, but in what way? Should we continue to bear as many children possible? Could the command be for something else? Perhaps multiply the number of believers? Do some biblical and scientific research and discuss this passage in light of your findings. As always be sure to include your references.
