American Civil War

American Civil War

The American civil war was one of the largest wars that ever happened and that caused one of the highest numbers of soldiers to die in the war field. This was a war that took place on the United States soil looking forward to find solutions of their issues using the hard way to accomplish that which led to more destruction than the settling of the differences of the groups that were involved. In this case study, the study of the American Civil war is done in terms of the causes of the war, the significant leaders that played a role in the war, the consequences of the war occurring and the effects it left in America after the war is done.

American Civil War

The American war begun in 1861 and went all the way to the year 1865. This was a war that occurred between the Northern states and the Southern states due to the differences they had majorly concerning the slave trade and slavery. The Northern states formed a Group they called the Union and the Southern states formed their group called the Confederate states of America. The difference they had in their opinion regarding slavery led them to war against one another and this was the war that was called the American Civil war.

Reasons for the war

One of the major reasons that brought forth the war was the state’s rights, this being that the slave trade should come to an end and the laws in support of the same to be abolished completely to non-existence. The other major reason was that the southern people wanted the territories to be expanded in terms of where and who was involved in the slavery. They wanted the slavery to be expanded and the western territories to be included and the north people did not want that to happen but instead wanted the slavery to be exclusively open to the white people only.

In 1860, there was an election that was conducted and on the party of the Republican Party there was a winner who now became the Americans next president who was Abraham Lincoln. The election was won on a platform that was an anti-slavery platform which was supported fully by the Union which comprised of the Northern people. The confederacy states were never recognized diplomatically by the government as a joint entity and hence they were not able to secure any electoral seat in that government.

After Abraham Lincoln became president, the slavery expansion and slavery opposition itself was taken seriously and a deal was sealed by the president of an anti-slavery state. This was a clear indication that the southern states had lost all the influence they had. The southern states resolved to use force to gain their influence back in order to influence on what they believed in, hence the war broke out in April 1861 when secessionist forces went forth to attack the Fort Sumter in South Carolina.

The important figures in the war

Jefferson Davis

Davis was the president of the confederate states of America throughout the existence of the civil war that happened in America. Davis led the Southern states between1861-1865. However, the leadership that Davis depicted is said to be one of the weakest leadership experienced. Davis was a leader whose leadership was strenuous as he wanted to do everything by himself even when this was impossible.

He was always reluctance to delegate responsibilities, His leadership was one with favorism towards his friends, Davis had his fair share of feuds with powerful people which caused the confederate states to lose power of influence, his leadership was sort of dictatorship where there was no freedom to communicate any idea that was different from his own idea hence people would get into bad blood with him for disagreeing with what he suggested, Davis also neglected the civil matters and in place favored the military ones and Davis also paid a lot of attention to the details which were not important at the time.

John A. Logan

Logan was a general in the Union during the American civil war. Logan was nicknamed as ‘Black Jack’ due to appearance in complexion and the type of hair he had which would commonly be referred to as the jet-black hair. Logan who vied for an electoral position in 1858 and later in the same year won the elections in the U.S House of Representatives. Logan also won a position as a Jacksonian Democrat from Illinois’s during the held election to be the 9th congressional district in Illinois, this was a region with partisan and loyalties that were divided from the beginning of the civil war.

Before Logan had to choose to which group or rather side he belonged to, he had tried to play the neutral card which did not work for him. Later, he chose the Union army and participated in it as the colonel during the 31st Illinois Infantry, which he had organized himself for the people in congressional district. Logan was wounded severely during the battle of Fort Donelson which took place in 1862, this led to his promotion to become the brigadier general in the same year and Logan gladly resigned his congressional seat to accept the promotion he had received.

In the following year, Grant won Logan a seat in the commission as a major general in charge of a division in his army, the Corps of Grant’s Army of Tennessee. Logan proved to be instrumental in the Union army in 1863 during the Vicksburg campaign where he had played key roles in the Union victories at Raymond, Champion Hill and Port Gibson.  Grant awarded Logan was awarded the honor of leading the first Union troops into captured city of Vicksburg by Grant in July 4 at the end of the campaign.

Consequences and effects of the war.

Abraham Lincoln being a lawyer and a politician he knew that constitutional if citizens wanted and embraced slavery the constitution would protect them despite his personal view of slavery being a drain to the society. This caused the emancipation proclamation. This was where it was said that the emancipation was a military necessity and there were riots that gave this ground.

The Union army forced the Confederates to retreat at Antietam during the battle. This brought forth the victory of the Union and hence the emancipation proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln as a result of the moral victory of the northern states than the military one. The proclamation was effective as at January 1, 1863 which freed 3.1 million of the 4 million existing slaves. The other consequence was the large number of people who lost their lives during the war especially soldiers in the battle field. It is said that the number was like 50% more than the lost lives during world war I.

The American civil war brought about the change on the very thing that caused the war and saw a large number of slaves become emancipated. However, this came at a cause of many lives during the war including Abraham Lincoln. At the end of it all the good overrode the negative and as much as there might have been better ways to settle the differences at the time, the goal was still achieved.
