APA Formatting Style

APA formatting style

It goes without saying that no matter how skilled you are at crafting quality academic papers, you won’t be able to get the highest grade if you don’t cite your sources. There are various citation styles used in various academic disciplines. If one does not know how to cite their work using APA citation style, they’ll have a heck of a time on their hands trying to find out what exactly they’re doing wrong when writing an APA paper from scratch.

APA stands for American Psychological Association and it’s a referencing style that is primarily used by students and professionals in the social sciences field. For instance, students majoring in psychology, sociology, anthropology or other similar fields will have likely have been taught APA formatting guidelines in their introductory courses. APA style was developed in 1929 and it is one of the most popular styles used today by professional writers all across the globe.

The Chicago Manual of Style (which is also a great guide for students) has stated that “in its basic form, APA documentation provides an author-date citation in the text and a complete reference list”. What this basically means is that when using APA format, you’ll need to follow not only in-text citations but also a reference list which follows an order of author’s last name and publication date.

If you’re thinking what we’re all thinking right now: that sounds like quite a bit of work! Well, don’t worry because we’ve put together a comprehensive and easy to follow APA citation guide for your convenience.

How to Cite in APA:

There are various formats you can choose from when creating an in-text citation. The following information outlines the basic formats that should be used in most situations:

Format 1: (Author p., year).

According to Author p, we learn that … (p., year)

For example: According to Daza (2013), we learn that …

According to Author v, we learn that … (p., year)

., you only need to reference the author’s last name instead of both their first and last name: (Author, Date). For example: Daza, S. 2013…

Be mindful of in-text parenthetical citations in APA format

When using in-text parenthetical citations in APA style you should be mindful of the fact that they should not contain any periods or other punctuation marks. The exception to this rule is if the author’s name contains a comma e.g., “Smith, J.” In such instances, there should be a space before and after the comma; which would yield: Smith, J . You’ll also need to make sure that any information within parentheses comes after the punctuation mark i.e., it should never come before any commas or periods. If you’re unsure as to whether or not the information goes before or after a punctuation mark, simply leave it out and re-read your sentence – if it makes sense without the in-text citation then you don’t need it!

For example: According to Daza (2013), one should always organize their essay using an outline. Just keep in mind that when including multiple authors’ names, there should always be a comma between names given that they are written as Last Name, First Initial., Last name, first initial. Format 2: (Author, date).

According to Daza (2013), we learn that … Format 3: (Author date).

According to Torre v (2014) … Format 4: (Author date, Title of work p.: xxx-xxx).

According to Daza , one should always organize their essay using an outline. Keep in mind that if the information you’re including is both author’s last name and year of publication then it should go within a parenthesis as opposed to a set of brackets i.e., “(” and “)” do not have interchangeable functions despite what you might read elsewhere! For example: According to John Jones’ research from 2013, we learn… But according to(Jones, 2013) we learn… In your reference list, you’ll need to insert the author’s name followed by a comma then the year of publication. For example:

Daza, S. (2013).

In-text citations in APA format should always be written as follows: In your reference list, you’ll need to insert the author’s name followed by a comma then the year of publication e.g., Daza, S . 2013… Format 3: (Author date).

In-text citations in APA style should never go before any punctuation marks except if they’re including a last name that contains a comma i.e., “Smith, J.” In such instances, there should be a space before and after the comma; which would yield: Smith, J Format 4: (Author date, Title of work p.: xxx-xxx).

In your reference list, you’ll need to insert the author’s name followed by a comma then the year of publication e.g., Torre v (2014) … Format 5 works best when the author’s name is quite long and their year of publication isn’t essential to your text e.g., you only need to reference the author’s last name instead of both their first and last name: (Author, Date).

Although most scholars agree that John Doe wrote this paper in 2013, his paper is still widely read and cited to this day.
