How To Write A History Essay

Writing an essay for a history class can be difficult. There are so many types of essays to write, and it is hard to know where to start. However, the main point of all history essays is to use knowledge from your own research to support your thesis. The best way that you can do this is by organizing your thoughts well before you start writing. Once you have done that, then you will be ready to begin!

1.) Write out your thesis statement first. It should include what you want to prove or argue about the subject in general terms without giving away too much information at first. Keep it simple and strong. For example, “The historical impact on women’s rights in the US was driven by religion” is not a good thesis statement. It is too general and lacks direction. A better one might be, “The push towards women’s rights in the US was driven by specific Protestant values that differed from traditional Catholic values of the time”.

2.) Write down your main topics. Your essay should only cover a few points at most, so pick the ones that are most important to you and develop your research from there. Think of connections between all of them to form a cohesive paper with no gaps or contradictions. For example, let’s say you were doing research on Hawaii during World War II and decided to write an essay about it for history class. You could do something like this:

– The United States’ strategic position in the Pacific

– The importance of sugar plantations

– Japanese Americans being sent to internment camps

3.) Write down your subheadings. Write a general description of each one, but don’t think about what you are going to say yet. Once you have them all out on paper, then look at them as a whole and fill in any gaps that are left. For example, if the headings were “Location”, “Sugarcane Plantations” and “Internment Camps”, they might become “Hawaii is strategically located for US military interests in World War II”- “The conflict between plantation owners and workers was intensified by the influx of European immigrants who upended power structures”- “Due to the powerful position of Caucasian Americans, Japanese American citizens were sent to internment camps”.

4.) Write out the introduction. Write an introduction paragraph that begins with a hook or two sentences that grab attention and move into your thesis. This is followed by 3-5 body paragraphs, each one containing one subheading. Write 1-2 sentences for every subheading that include only what you already know from your research, then end it with a transitional sentence that ties them all together before moving on to the following subheadings. These are where you write about new things based on your own ideas backed up by facts from your research. The conclusion should be much shorter than the introduction and should provide closure to everything you talked about in your paper. It should present your final thoughts rather than introduce new information. For example, you can use the following intro to our Hawaii essay.

-“For the next several decades, Hawaii would be shaped by US interests in the Pacific and tensions between plantation owners and workers.”-

-“Although sugar plantations were essential to progress in Hawaii during World War II…”- etc.

5.) Write out all body paragraphs after you have written your thesis statement, subheadings and introduction! Your paper should look something like this:

A strong thesis is important for any type of writing, but it is especially important if you are writing an essay for a history class about a specific event or idea that has already happened because there might not be much primary source material available to support your claims.

What happened in the past is often seen through a certain lens, which might not provide the whole picture. For example, when we think about women’s rights in the US today, we think of successful movements such as The Suffragettes and feminist writers like Gloria Steinem and Simone de Beauvoir. However, these mostly come from an upper-middle class perspective that focuses on “equal pay for equal work,” reproductive rights and sexual liberation. While these were incredibly important and helped set in motion other women’s movements in later years—such as #MeToo—they do not tell the whole story of American women’s history nor do they serve as a foundation or cause for many crucial issues still facing women today…

For example, the treatment of female factory workers during WWII is an important topic that does not get as much attention. The conditions were horrific and women suffered great physical harm without receiving any help afterwards. As if this wasn’t bad enough, after the war, many women were replaced by returning soldiers because it was cheaper to hire them instead…

Hawaii is strategically located for US military interests in World War II. During this time period in history, Hawaii was a territory of the United States and home to Pearl Harbor. While sugar plantations had been a major industry in Hawaii since the arrival of Europeans in 1778, increased conflicts between plantation owners and factory workers sparked a rise in labor disputes that would intensify during WWII when larger numbers of immigrants arrived from Europe…

In the United States at the time, knowledge about Hawaii was scarce because few Americans had been there. In fact, many people were surprised when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941 and even more surprised to find out that it was located in Hawaii. This made the military presence during WWII especially urgent for America since we became vulnerable without a safe haven and base of operation…

The labor disputes between sugar plantation owners and factory workers intensified during WWII due to conditions like inflation and an increase in immigration from Europe. These immigrants often worked alongside women on plantations while their husbands fought in Europe, but after the war ended men came home and took jobs instead of letting women keep them. Many female workers were also let go once factories began using machines rather than hiring humans. Plantation owners also tried to lower their expenses on labor by importing people from Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and the Philippines. Unfortunately, many of these immigrants were met with racism, discrimination on the job and overcrowded living conditions. Additionally, they did not receive social security or health benefits like American citizens…

However, this is not to say that women did not contribute significantly during WWII in Hawaii. On the contrary, women’s involvement helped increase awareness about their lack of rights after the war ended…
